Category D prisons offer open conditions and house those who can be reasonably trusted not to try to escape.
There is a sports centre, offering prisoners qualifications in healthy living, fitness, and first aid, and some can coach with a local football project.
Prisoners can also learn to drive, access the local libraries, colleges and university as well as cook for themselves in self service accomodations.
Prisoners are typically given Release On Temporary Licence (ROTL) to work in the community or go on home leave, with orders to return to the prison by nightfall.
The majority of Category D prisoners will be towards the end of their sentence, and are used to prepare them for their eventual release.
