NWS Warns 'Severe' Storms Are Coming for 6 U.S. States
Winter is still around, but spring is on the horizon. That means instead of snow storms, heavy thunderstorms are soon to be a threat around the country.
According to the latest information from the National Weather Service (NWS) Strom Prediction Center, potentially severe weather could be coming to six states in the center of the country later in the week.
Which states are at risk?
While it's still too early to provide an accurate forecast, the NWS Storm Prediction Center tweeted out a graphic indicating a "slight" elevated risk of severe weather for Wednesday through Saturday.
On Friday, the following states may be hit with "active severe weather."
- Iowa
- Kansas
- Nebraska
- Missouri
- Oklahoma
- Texas
"Severe weather chances will increase this week. A level 2 out of 5 risk (Slight) is currently forecast from Wednesday to Saturday. Forecast specifics remain uncertain, but an extended period of active severe weather appears likely," the Storm Prediction Center said.

What about Wednesday?
As for Wednesday, the Storm Prediction Center says to be on the lookout for potentially "severe storms with large hail and damaging wind gusts" from the southern Plains into the western Ozarks.
Meanwhile, "marginally severe storms" are possible from the northern Ozarks into the Ohio Valley.
"At the surface, a cold front will advance southeastward into the southern Plains and western Ozarks," the Storm Prediction Center said. "Ahead of the front, surface dewpoints will be in the 60s F. As surface temperatures warm during the day across this moist airmass, pockets of moderate instability appear likely to develop from north-central and northeast Texas into southeastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. As low-level convergence increases near the front in the afternoon, scattered thunderstorms are expected to form."
"This environment will support severe thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, with a potential for large hail and severe wind gusts, and perhaps a tornado threat," the prediction center added. "The severe threat will be maximized in areas with supercell development. The severe threat will likely persist into the late evening as a low-level jet strengthens."
