Big blow: Man Utd suffer fresh injury setback at the worst possible time
Manchester United have been dealt a worrying fitness setback at a crucial stage of the season.
Man United Under-21s lost 2-0 to Chelsea on Monday evening, but the result quickly became secondary to a far more concerning moment.
Chido Obi spearheaded the attack but suffered a horrific head injury in the final minute. He was struck in the head by a clearance from U21 goalkeeper Max Merrick.
Obi lay on the turf for more than five minutes while the United medical staff treated him.
He was eventually taken off in the sixth minute of stoppage time, paving the way for Victor Musa to get a big opportunity.
Obi has been in sensational form this season.
Still only 18, he has consistently competed above his natural age group, showcasing maturity far beyond his years. His return of 14 goals and four assists in 25 appearances shows his growing influence.
The Red Devils will now anxiously hope for positive news, especially with the FA Youth Cup quarter-final on March 18 fast approaching.
After making his debut for the senior team last year, many believed that Obi could earn a permanent position in the first-team this campaign.
Due to the lack of European fixtures, United made the right call to drop him down to the youth team to continue his development.
It is not a step backwards but a better utilisation of time and opportunity available at his disposal.
United head coach Michael Carrick was also at the stadium to watch the game, alongside assistant Steve Holland, U-18s manager Darren Fletcher, and director of football Jason Wilcox.
