Jackson Hole Skier Takes Down S&S Couloir's Daunting Wallride
The kids are alright, and they’re teeing off some of the toughest stuff Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has on offer.
In this case, it was S&S Couloir, the little rock slot near its better-known sibling, Corbet’s Couloir.
The line’s a bear, with only two viable options. Either you jump in, or, alternatively, ski over rocks on a steep face. Liam Thompson, a local ripper, chose the latter, flawlessly knocking off S&S.

That’s how you ski S&S. Or, as Thompson called it, "Corbet’s Cooler".
In the comments section below his post, an amusing back-and-forth emerged, with some people missing the joke. That prompted even more alternative name suggestions, like “corbeys” and, my favorite, “corbiets coolier.”
Regardless, getting the two confused makes sense. They’re both spooky Jackson Hole lines, and they’re practically within spitting distance of each other.
The biggest difference is that Corbet’s, probably because it’s more forgiving, has, in a way, become Jackson Hole’s mascot.
If you're an expert skier planning a trip there, you might be thinking about adding the Corbet’s feather to your cap. It’s worthy of bragging rights, but semi-accessible.

S&S, on the other hand, is best saved for those with a higher tolerance for exposure.
Named after the ski patrollers who pioneered it, Charlie Sands and John Sims, the line requires quick reflexes and confidence in equal measure. Plus, there’s less room to move around in S&S than in Corbet’s, with towering rock faces on almost all sides.
That’s not to say Corbet’s is a slouch fest, though—far from it. The increasingly viral webcam pointed at the line has proven illuminating, filling up with clips of skiers biting off more than they can chew. The Corbet’s carnage has even spawned its own Instagram page: @corbetscam.
For those of us who’ve thought, “Yeah, I bet I could ski the mellower goat’s path entrance,” the page offers a reminder: Corbet’s may be well trafficked, but it can, and will, eat your lunch. Then, if you're superhuman, there's S&S.
