1994 Hit Ranked 'Best Movie of The 1990s'
Quentin Tarantino's genre-defining thriller Pulp Fiction has been named the best movie of the 1990s, according to a list compiled byTheTopTens.
The film, which was released on October 14, 1994, was an immediate critical success that won countless awards and catapulted Tarantino to international fame as the leading directorial voice of his generation.
'Pulp Fiction' Has An Enduring Legacy
Even today, more than three decades after its original release, Pulp Fiction remains one of the most popular movies of all time. Its unique blend of snappy dialogue, flawed characters, and unpredictable twists make it an incredibly engaging watch that's stood the test of time brilliantly.
Tarantino was already a well-respected director before Pulp Fiction, with his debut feature Reservoir Dogs winning several awards in 1992. Steve Buscemi's victory at the Independent Spirit Awards brought plenty of eyes to the movie, with people eagerly anticipating what this up-and-coming writer/director would make next.
Subsequently, Pulp Fiction was screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994, where it took home the festival's most prestigious award—the Palme d'Or. It went on to receive seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and it even won Best Original Screenplay. This was such a meteoric rise to success for Tarantino that made him impossible to root against.
Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of Pulp Fiction is the non-linear storytelling, with the story constantly jumping back and forth between flashbacks and flash-forwards in several interweaving storylines. It's an impressive feat of writing, and a rare example of a director receiving awards purely on merit without a pre-established industry narrative to lean on. It was an undeniable success story.
Tarantino would go on to direct several other acclaimed movies, including Jackie Brown, Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood.
On TheTopTens' ranking, Pulp Fiction narrowly beat classics such as The Green Mile, The Silence of the Lambs, and The Shawshank Redemption—which is No. 1 on the IMDb Top 250.
