Trump fires Homeland Security chief Kristi Noem, appoints Senator Mullin as replacement
U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Thursday and announced Senator Markwayne Mullin as her replacement.
Donald Trump announced that he has removed Kristi Noem from her post as head of the United States Department of Homeland Security.
Trump said in a social media post that Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin will replace Noem, with the leadership change set to take effect on March 31.
The U.S. president said Noem will instead serve as a special envoy for a new security initiative called the “Shield of the Americas,” focused on security cooperation across the Western Hemisphere.
Trump praised Noem’s work during her tenure, saying she had achieved “spectacular results,” particularly regarding border security and immigration enforcement.
However, Noem’s tenure became controversial due to the administration’s hardline immigration policies and growing criticism from Democratic lawmakers during recent congressional hearings.
During a hearing of the United States House Judiciary Committee, Democratic lawmakers strongly criticized Noem’s leadership and immigration enforcement policies.
Representative Pramila Jayapal accused Noem of undermining constitutional protections and called for her resignation, dismissal, or impeachment.
The reshuffle marks the first major cabinet-level change during Trump’s second presidential term, highlighting continued political tensions over immigration policy in the United States.
