Global Muslim scholars’ chief issues fatwa urging Afghanistan–Pakistan ceasefire
Ali Mohiuddin al-Qaradaghi al-Husseini, head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, has issued a religious ruling calling for an immediate ceasefire between Taliban forces and Pakistani troops during the final ten days of Ramadan.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Qaradaghi said both sides should halt hostilities during the closing days of the holy month and maintain calm through the upcoming Eid al‑Fitr celebrations.
He said that after the ceasefire and Eid holidays, the two sides should resume negotiations with mediation from Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to address their disputes.
Qaradaghi cited verses from the Qur’an and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, saying Islam strongly condemns the killing of fellow Muslims and warns against divisions among Muslim communities.
Calling the ceasefire a “religious obligation,” he said Muslim nations must avoid internal conflict and instead unite in the face of what he described as growing regional threats.
Border clashes between Taliban fighters and Pakistani forces have continued for more than a week along the frontier between Afghanistan and Pakistan, with both sides claiming to have inflicted heavy casualties.
Meanwhile, Pakistani officials say attacks by the Pakistani Taliban have increased, including a bombing last month at a mosque in Islamabad that killed at least 31 people.
Qaradaghi said the scholars’ union is prepared to send delegations to both Afghanistan and Pakistan to support mediation efforts and encourage dialogue aimed at ending the escalating violence.
