Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy is speaking out after a tense Senate hearing exchange with soon-to-be former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that reportedly preceded her firing by Donald Trump.

The exchange centered on a controversial $220 million Department of Homeland Security advertising campaign that Kennedy questioned during a recent Senate hearing, as The Gateway Pundit previously reported.

The ads, which were broadcast nationwide, prominently featured Noem and were criticized by several lawmakers as appearing more like political promotions than official government messaging.

During the hearing, Kennedy pressed Noem directly about whether President Trump had personally approved the massive advertising campaign before it was launched.

Noem responded that the campaign had gone through the proper legal channels and indicated that the president had approved the effort.

During a Friday interview on Fox News, Kennedy said the situation escalated shortly after the hearing when President Trump personally contacted him.

The president, Kennedy said, was furious about the implication that he had signed off on the controversial advertising campaign.

“He was mad as a mama wasp,” Kennedy said in a televised interview after the exchange. “He said, ‘Kennedy, I hope you understand that I had nothing to do with this.’”

Kennedy explained that he had contacted the White House briefly before the hearing simply to inform them that he intended to ask tough oversight questions, which he described as a routine part of a senator’s job.

“There was nothing mysterious about what I did,” Kennedy said. “I did my job as a senator.”

The Louisiana senator emphasized that his concerns were not personal and that he had previously praised Noem for helping to implement President Trump’s immigration policies and secure the southern border.

However, Kennedy said managerial problems within the Department of Homeland Security had become a growing concern among lawmakers.

“I’m very fond of the secretary,” Kennedy said. “But there were managerial problems at the department that were distracting from the president’s agenda and our agenda.”

Kennedy also criticized the scale of the advertising campaign, describing the spending as excessive at a time when federal agencies are expected to carefully manage taxpayer funds.

“When I see what I perceive to be spending porn, I don’t care who does it. I’m going to call it out,” Kennedy said. “I’m pretty cheap when it comes to taxpayer money.”

The controversy quickly intensified after the hearing. Later that same day, President Trump reportedly decided to remove Noem from her position.

In Washington, the episode is being framed by many conservatives as an example of strong leadership from President Trump.

Supporters of the administration argue that the president has consistently shown a willingness to remove officials who undermine his agenda or misrepresent his decisions.

“That’s my job,” Kennedy said. “Sometimes people think I’m too frank, but I’m going to ask the questions.”

Those issues remain central to the Trump administration’s agenda.

The president’s immigration policies—including expanded enforcement and stronger border security measures—remain widely supported among his political base.

For Kennedy, the episode ultimately highlighted the importance of transparency in government spending and leadership that remains focused on policy goals rather than personal promotion.

“I play outside the pocket,” Kennedy said. “I’ll never completely fit in—and that’s one of my best qualities.”
