Nathan shared the news at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C. alongside his co-stars Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau. Everyone is expected to return to reprise their roles and Adam Baldwin is also involved in the project.
Deadline shares that the animated series is being developed through The Rookie star’s production banner Collision33 in partnership with 20th Television Animation.
The reboot will reportedly be set between the original 2002 TV show and the 2005 film continuation, Serenity, maintaining already-established canon lore.
“The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant. Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve,” Nathan said to Deadline.
Firefly originally aired in 2002 and consisted of 14 episodes, but it was sadly canceled after just one season. That said, it ended up having a very long life on streaming platforms and physical media, resulting in the eventual film Serenity.
While Firefly is expected to see new life in animated form, another beloved sci-fi/fantasy series created by Joss Whedon that was supposed to return soon in a new series has sadly been canceled. Learn more details here.
