Why ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ Was Named the Best Netflix Original Movie of All Time

In February 2026, Entertainment Weekly updated its ranking of the best Netflix original movies and placed the 2022 war epic All Quiet on the Western Front at the very top. The movie was adapted from Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 semi-autobiographical novel which has been the basis of other films before it.
Entertainment Weekly called the film "one of the starkest examples of anti-war sentiment in cinematic history." That was extremely high praise considering how many powerful and unflinching war movies have come before it. The ranking also highlighted how it skillfully depicted a young German soldier's harrowing experiences during World War I as he loses his friends and innocence.
Arguably one of the best war movies ever made, All Quiet on the Western Front manages to be gorgeously shot and brutally ugly at the same time. It puts the viewer in the chaos of battle so effectively that watching it from your home can feel like you've gone through a journey. The film is also a perfect example of how an unusual score can pull viewers in. Recently, in March 2026, CNET named it as one of the best movies to stream on Netflix, while MovieWeb once named it as Netflix's best Original movie from 2022.
