'Fantastic': Carrick sparks fresh contract twist for resurgent Man United hero
Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has dropped a strong hint over a potential contract extension for one of his key players.
Carrick was speaking to the media ahead of the Premier League contest with Bournemouth later today.
Harry Maguire faces an uncertain future with his current deal expiring at the end of June. He has been exceptional under the new head coach, starting each of the last nine games.
Carrick was pressed on whether the club intend to retain Maguire beyond this season.
He said (via ManUtd.com): “There’s obviously talks going on in terms of what the squad’s going to look like, come the end of the season, and what it looks like after that.
“Harry’s done fantastic for us. I think it’s pretty obvious to say that. He’s had a big impact on what we’ve done.
“So, we’ll have to see. I enjoy working with him, I think he’s been fantastic for this club and we’ll see what comes of that.”
Maguire deserves new contract
In the absence of Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, the 33-year-old has stepped up when it mattered most.
Maguire has led the defence with authority, guiding emerging talents like Leny Yoro through high-pressure moments.
The young French defender has openly praised the support and leadership he has received from his experienced partner.
At this stage, Maguire appears to be at the peak of his powers, particularly in reading the game and commanding the penalty area.
With Casemiro already set to leave at the end of the season, there is no doubt that the England international should be given a fresh deal of 12-24 months.
While United may push for a wage adjustment, their current situation suggests they have limited leverage if they want to keep him.
