Woman, child killed in Kunar in suspected Pakistan strike during ceasefire
A female health worker and her three-year-old child were killed in a reported Pakistani attack in Afghanistan’s Kunar province, local sources said.
The strike took place Thursday morning in the Nari district, where the woman’s husband, one of her sons and their driver were also wounded.
Sources said the victim worked at a health centre in Nuristan’s Kamdesh district and was travelling home to Kunar during the Eid ceasefire period.
According to reports, the vehicle carrying the woman and her family was targeted along the way in Nari district, raising concerns about civilian safety.
Local Taliban officials in Kunar have not commented, but authorities have accused Pakistan of violating the ceasefire with continued cross-border attacks.
Pakistan and the Taliban had announced a temporary halt in hostilities for Eid al-Fitr, following requests from regional countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE.
The border regions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, particularly Kunar, have long witnessed sporadic clashes, often linked to militant activity and security tensions.
The latest incident underscores the fragility of the ceasefire, with civilian casualties threatening to derail efforts to maintain calm during the Eid period.
