'He's hurting us': Republicans trash Sen. Mike Lee's 'scorched earth' MAGA antics

Sen. Mike Lee’s refusal to back down on pushing his Republican colleagues in the Senate to force through the SAVE America Act has them gritting their teeth and even has some wondering if he should be stripped of a committee chairmanship due to his "scorched earth" tactics.

According to reporting from Politico's Jordain Carney, Lee's aggressive, hyper-online tactics promoting elections legislation overhaul have sparked widespread private frustration among Republicans who view his strategy as self-serving, counterproductive, and potentially damaging to the party's midterm prospects.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), a retiring lawmaker, didn't mince words about Lee's approach. "That seems to be a self-serving attempt at elevating yourself at the expense of your Republican colleagues, and I don't have any patience for that sort of stuff," Tillis said, criticizing what he characterized as a lack of "strategic clarity" from Lee about the endgame.

Lee remains undeterred, deploying late-night X streams, constant social media salvos, and floor speeches to hammer home his position that the SAVE America Act represents an existential matter for American democracy itself. "It would be a suicidal move for us as Senate Republicans, for Republicans in general, if we don't put everything we've got into this," Lee declared this week. "We need to debate this as long as it takes to get it done."

The tension has escalated to the point where Lee's own side is circulating his online posts as evidence of his problematic behavior. One post suggested that senators failing to support his tactics "you might need to replace them"—language that has raised concerns about his future ability to build coalitions on legislation.

Some GOP senators have begun privately discussing whether removing Lee from his committee chairmanship is feasible, according to two Republican sources. "He's hurting us," one said. While some colleagues dismissed the removal talk as mere venting, the breadth of frustration is undeniable.

Republicans fear Lee is peddling false hope to his online base, selling a narrative that Republican weakness—rather than Democratic opposition—deserves blame for legislative setbacks. "It's the clicks," one senator said bluntly when asked Lee's true motivation. "He goes too far. … He has almost no self-awareness."

Other GOP senators have simply stepped back from the fray, confused about how Lee intends to resolve the standoff he's created. A sixth senator, speaking anonymously, refrained from personal criticism but characterized the situation Lee unleashed as "very chaotic."

Multiple senators believe Lee harbors higher political ambitions—a past flirtation with a leadership bid, possible Cabinet aspirations, or according to some of his most fervent online boosters, even a run at Senate majority leader or a Supreme Court appointment.
