‘Project Hail Mary’ Has A Shocking A-List Cameo — And The Internet Loves It
Project Hail Mary is the blockbuster event of the year so far, pulling in $140 million at the worldwide box office and securing the largest opening weekend of 2026 (via Variety). The film has been a massive success with both critics and general audiences, and its momentum isn't slowing down any time soon.
Ryan Gosling's latest sci-fi adventure follows a middle school teacher named Ryland Grace, who is sent on a dangerous mission to the other side of the galaxy to find the solution to a bacterial virus that's stealing energy from the sun and theatening to throw all life on Earth into extinction.
Meryl Streep Has A Hilarious Cameo in 'Project Hail Mary'
Upon arriving at his destination, Gosling's protagonist meets another lifeform: an alien engineer who's there for exactly the same reason—to save his world. Grace and his new friend, Rocky, learn to communicate with each other through an interpretation software that Grace develops, giving Rocky a robotic voice that translates his language into English.
The pair cycle through some potential voices for their new translation software—one is too childish, one is too scary, and another is three-time Academy Award-winner Meryl Streep.

"When we were on set, we did a bunch of silly voices ourselves," director Christopher Miller explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "We had people from the crew do voices just to make Ryan laugh and have the characters have something to react to."
"And then we [thought], wouldn’t it be fun to get Meryl Streep? And Ryan just said, ‘She can do anything,’ and that was perfect [...] And she was so fun and thoughtful and playful and did a million different versions: ‘I’ll do more. You want me to try this? Try that?'”
While there's plenty to love about Project Hail Mary, this unexpected cameo has become one of the film's biggest talking points online. One X user calls it: "One more awesome detail in an incredible movie."
Another wrote: "Meryl Streep stays winning with her vocal work in both Hoppers and Project Hail Mary."
Andy Weir, author of the 'Project Hail Mary' novel, said: "I love how it ended up being Meryl Streep pretending to be a computer that is pretending to be Meryl Streep." (via Screen Rant).
Project Hail Mary is currently playing in theaters worldwide.
