Raymarine: Evolution Autopilot Control Goes Wireless
Raymarine announced the launch of the RCU-1 Wireless Autopilot Remote at its Hudson, New Hampshire, headquarters this week, introducing a handheld interface for the manufacturer’s Evolution autopilot systems. The unit allows operators to manage heading and navigation data from anywhere on deck via a Bluetooth® connection to a dedicated gateway.
The hardware utilizes a 98-foot (30m) wireless range facilitated by the WG-1 wireless gateway, which bridges the remote to existing NMEA 2000 and SeaTalkNG networks. While the remote provides mobile control of the helm, it also functions as a secondary data instrument. The sunlight-viewable color display outputs real-time vessel data, including heading, speed, depth, and active waypoint information.
Safety for the Short-handed Sailor
A primary technical feature of the RCU-1 is the Solo Sailor Mode. This safety protocol is designed specifically for man-overboard (MOB) scenarios. If the Bluetooth® link between the remote and the gateway is severed—indicating the wearer has fallen overboard or moved beyond the 98-foot operational radius—the system automatically initiates a recovery maneuver. For sailing vessels, the autopilot is programmed to turn the boat into the wind and reduce speed to a near-stop, assisting a single-handed sailor in remaining close to the vessel.
Technical Specifications and Integration
The remote is designed for single-handed operation and features “Point-and-Go” navigation, allowing a captain to set or adjust a course by pointing the device in the intended direction of travel. Power is supplied by two AA batteries, which provide a reported 30-day battery life through the use of integrated power-saving modes.
The RCU-1 and WG-1 Starter Kit includes the handheld remote and the wireless receiver unit required for network integration. For larger crews or multi-station vessels, additional RCU-1 units can be networked to a single gateway.
The starter kit will retail for $549.99 and is scheduled to reach Raymarine’s network of dealers and retailers in the second quarter of 2026.
