Earlier Than Expected: Taos Ski Area Sets Final Closing Date
Unfortunately, low snowfall and warm temperatures have claimed another western ski area this season.
Taos announced its early closing date on Monday via social media, citing unseasonably warm temperatures and rapidly changing conditions.
The New Mexico ski area's last day of the 2025/26 season will be Sunday, March 29, 2026. Taos will host an end-of-season celebration at the Base Area Plaza on Saturday, March 28, to celebrate and send off the Winter 2026 season.
The ski area will keep as much terrain open as possible until closing day, but conditions are changing quickly, so guests are encouraged to check the resort website for updates.
Taos claims to receive an average of 300 inches of snow per season. According to the resort's website, just 76 inches of snow has fallen during the winter 25/26 season.

"Due to unseasonably warm temperatures and changing conditions, we’ll be wrapping up the season a bit early, with a planned closing day of Sunday, March 29. Our mountain teams gave it everything they had, but unfortunately, Mother Nature had different plans with warmer temperatures than expected this season.
"We’re making the most of the days we have left by keeping as much terrain open as possible. Conditions may change daily, so be sure to stay tuned and check our website for the latest terrain and operations updates before your next visit.
"We’ll be hosting a Season Celebration in the Base Area Plaza on Saturday, March 28, and we hope you’ll join us to celebrate the Winter 26 season.
"A huge thank you to our staff for their incredible work this season, and to our passholders and guests for showing up with such great energy day after day. Let’s make the most of these spring laps together," read the mountain's social media announcement.
Taos was hit particularly hard by the warm winter across much of the western US. The ski area only has a 17" base remaining. New Mexico is currently sitting at less than 50% of its median snow-water equivalent.
Temperatures in Taos County are also reported to be roughly 8 degrees over the normal maximum temperature over the last 30 days, according to Drought.gov. Much of Arizona, California, Utah, Colorado, Oregon, and parts of Idaho are also at less than 50% of average snowpack for the season, and ski areas across all states are reconsidering closing dates or have already closed early.
