Cyprus wineries target global markets at major Athens exhibition

Cyprus stepped up its international wine push at Oenorama 2026 in Athens, with 16 wineries showcasing the range, authenticity and growing appeal of the island’s vineyard, according to the energy ministry.

The exhibition, held from March 13 to 16 at Onassis Ready, by Onassis Foundation, drew importers, journalists, wine professionals and wine enthusiasts, offering Cyprus a broader platform to promote both its established labels and lesser-known indigenous varieties.

The Cypriot delegation was organised by the Cyprus Trade Centre in Athens, in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy, while the ministry said the national presence was stronger and more upgraded this year, attracting solid interest from both trade visitors and the public.

The Cypriot pavilion also became a focal point for business meetings and tastings, while ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps visited following an initiative by the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Athens.

Guests were welcomed by Cyprus’ ambassador to Greece, Stavros Avgoustides, and commercial counsellor Iosif Kypraios, with representatives from 25 countries, alongside importers, entrepreneurs and other sector professionals, attending the event.

Participating in the Cyprus pavilion were Aes Ambelis Winery, The Anama Concept, Vasilikon Winery, Vlassides Winery, Vouni Panayia Winery, Gialeli Winery, Krasopoulin Winery, Ezousa Winery, Zambartas Wines, Kyperounda Winery, Makarounas Vineyards, Mystes Wines, Nelion Winery, Oenou Yi – Ktima Vassiliades, Tsiakkas Winery and one more selected producer under the national showcase.

At the heart of the showcase were Cyprus’ indigenous grape varieties.

The ministry said visitors were introduced to the distinct character of Cypriot wine through tastings of both iconic and contemporary labels, with red varieties such as Maratheftiko, Giannoudi, Mavro and Ofthalmo drawing attention, alongside whites including Xynisteri, Morokanella, Spourtiko and Promara.

A central place was also given to PDO Commandaria, which remains one of the world’s oldest and best-known sweet wines.

Beyond the tastings, the exhibition also opened the door to fresh commercial opportunities.

Important contacts were made with importers and market representatives, helping create prospects for new partnerships and stronger export activity for Cypriot wineries.

The ministry said that “Cyprus’ successful participation in Oenorama 2026 confirms its strategic push for the systematic and targeted promotion of Cypriot wine abroad, with the focus remaining on quality, authenticity and indigenous varieties.”
