Why Billie Eilish Is Such a Huge Part of 'Survivor 50'
If you're watching Survivor 50, here's a good drinking game to play: Take a drink every time someone says "Billie Eilish." You'll be toasted before they even get to tribal council.
Why are these Survivor all-stars talking so much about Billie Eilish? The ten-time Grammy winner's only connection to the show is a casual mention in her song "TV." But this season, she's behind a major twist in the game.
This season, immunity idols are anything but ordinary — they're Billie Eilish Boomerang Idols. Rather than keeping the idol for themself, the finder must gift it to someone on an opposing tribe. If the recipient gets eliminated without playing the idol, it boomerangs back to the person who found it. The clue even comes with a custom note from the "Birds of a Feather" singer, opening with, "Hey, it's Billie Eilish." Survivor 50's subtitle is In the Hands of the Fans, as fans voted on certain twists for the season. "80% of fans voted to have idols," the clue continues, "so I figured why not have one of my own?"
Obviously, the connection seems pretty random. Why isn't it the Billy Idol Boomerang Idol?
Well, Jeff Probst told People that Eilish is a Survivor superfan with whom the show was desperate to collaborate.
How the Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol Came to Be
Probst explained that when producers decided they wanted to collab with the singer, they sent her a whole bunch of ideas. "She said, 'I like the boomerang,'" Probst explained. "Then, we kind of wrote out the clue, and she approved that as well."
He added, "It was really fun to collaborate with her. She was enthusiastic about it."
Probst even hinted that there's a chance we may see the "Bad Guy" singer try to tough it out on the island. I saw a little interview with Billie where she said, ‘I think I might want to play,’ and I’m just saying, the invitation is there,” the host said. “It seems unlikely. It’s a long commitment, but Billie’s always welcome.”
