’70s Rock Legends May Be Reconnecting After Years of Tension

During and after Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were a couple for years, the former Fleetwood Mac bandmates made beautiful music together for a long time. However, they haven't performed together since April 2018, when Buckingham was fired from the band that made them both music legends. Now, a March 2026 social media post from him has given fans reason to think that could change soon.
On March 27, 2026, Buckingham posted a video on X in which he talked about why he is excited about the possibilities for 2026. Partway through the clip, the iconic rock star brought up the 2025 re-release of the 1973 album "Buckingham Nicks" and how it helped bring him closer to Nicks. Then, Buckingham appeared to hint that something could come from the two of them getting on better terms.
“The energy in terms of what ‘Buckingham Nicks’ did to create a resurgence of connection between Stevie and myself, I think on a larger scale, that seems to be something that's in the air. And what that translates to specifically, I wouldn't want to speculate yet. But I believe with all my heart, it will translate to something good and something wonderful and something needed and something extremely appropriate.”
Buckingham certainly didn't say anything specific, and he seemed unsure about exactly what might happen next. Still, there is no denying that his words left fans with the strong feeling that the two could work together again soon.

A Look Back at Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham's Recently Rocky History
If Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham wind up collaborating again, it will be a huge moment in one of the most dramatic relationships in rock and roll history. After all, the former couple and bandmates have gone years without performing together or appearing to be on good terms.
After Buckingham was fired from Fleetwood Mac in 2018, tensions between him and Nicks appeared to be extremely high. For example, a 2021 Rolling Stone article based on an interview with Buckingham stated that he blamed Nicks for his dismissal, and it quoted him saying the following about her. “I think others in the band just felt that they were not empowered enough, individually, for whatever their own reasons, to stand up for what was right.”
When asked for her side, Nicks disputed Buckingham's version of events. “It’s unfortunate that Lindsey has chosen to tell a revisionist history of what transpired in 2018 with Fleetwood Mac." She then stated that instead of getting Buckingham fired, she decided she wouldn't work with him any longer and removed herself from the band.
"Following an exceedingly difficult time with Lindsey at MusiCares in New York, in 2018, I decided for myself that I was no longer willing to work with him. I could publicly reflect on the many reasons why, and perhaps I will do that someday in a memoir, but suffice it to say we could start in 1968 and work up to 2018 with a litany of very precise reasons why I will not work with him. To be exceedingly clear, I did not have him fired, I did not ask for him to be fired, I did not demand he be fired. Frankly, I fired myself. I proactively removed myself from the band and a situation I considered to be toxic to my well-being. I was done. If the band went on without me, so be it."
Later in 2024, Nicks spoke to Rolling Stone about her relationship with Buckingham. She told the outlet that she'd only briefly spoken to him since 2018, at former bandmate Christine McVie's celebration of life. She also added that she'd given him many chances over the years.
“The only time I’ve spoken to Lindsey was there, for about three minutes. I dealt with Lindsey for as long as I could. You could not say that I did not give him more than 300 million chances."
While both have consistently shown respect for each other as musical talents, their highly strained relationship has felt obvious for many years. That makes any hint that they might still reunite just as shocking as it is exciting.
