AMC Abruptly Cancels New Supernatural Series After Just Six Episodes
It looks like it's sunrise for AMC'S Talamasca: The Secret Service — with the network cancelling the spin-off series after just six episodes.
Per its official description, the now-defunct vampire show followed Guy Anatole (Nicholas Denton), who, “on the cusp of graduating law school, is approached by a representative of the Talamasca, a secretive agency that monitors and protects us from the supernatural world. When Guy learns that the Talamasca has been tracking him since his childhood, he falls headlong into a world of secret agents and immortal beings who, up to now, have maintained a fragile balance with the mortal world.”
Talamasca, as it is commonly referred to, is a mixed adaptation, taking inspiration from Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches novels. The AMC adaptations of the late author's works are collectively referred to as Anne Rice's Immortal Universe, a canon that has previously enjoyed successful shows such as Interview with the Vampire (2022-present), now referred to as The Vampire Lestat from its third season onwards.
The spin-off featured crossover characters from the latter series, namely Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) and Raglan James (Justin Kirk). Mayfair Witches, a television adaptation also inspired by the novel of the same name, was renewed for an upcoming third season last year.
Talamasca barely scraped a "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes with critics, at just 63%, with 60% being the minimum to avoid a "rotten" score. According to data collected by Cancelled Sci-Fi, viewers weren't drawn in much either. The Anne Rice adaptation averaged only a 0.02 rating among adults 18–49 based on same-day viewing, with around 200K total viewers across its linear broadcasts. No data was available for its streaming on AMC+.
Despite the project not earning a second season, there is some hope, however, for fans of the supernatural series. “While we are not proceeding with another season of ‘Talamasca: The Secret Order,’ we are proud of the series and grateful for the efforts of everyone involved,” an AMC spokesperson said in a statement to Variety confirming its cancellation.
“The Talamasca has a storied place within the Anne Rice Immortal Universe, and we expect to see at least some of these characters, and the organization itself, in future expressions of the franchise.”
