Pentagon Prepares for Possible Ground Operations in Iran, Report Says
The Pentagon is reportedly preparing for possible ground operations in Iran as the conflict deepens and US military deployments continue across the region.
The Washington Post on Sunday, citing US officials, reported that the Pentagon is preparing contingency plans for weeks of possible ground operations in Iran, including options involving special operations forces and conventional infantry units.
According to the report, it remains unclear whether President Donald Trump will approve such a move, as military planners reportedly weigh limited raids and targeted operations rather than a full-scale invasion of Iranian territory.
The report comes as the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran has entered its fifth week, with Washington already reinforcing its presence in the region by sending additional Marines and preparing more troop deployments.
Recent US military movements have included the deployment of the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, which arrived with thousands of Marines and equipment designed for rapid-response operations and potential combat escalation.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has previously suggested that Washington could still strike Iranian targets and pursue its objectives without launching a major ground invasion, indicating that internal debate continues over how far the campaign should go.
The possibility of ground operations marks a potentially dangerous turning point in the conflict, which has already disrupted energy flows, rattled shipping routes and drawn in additional regional actors such as the Houthis and armed groups aligned with Iran.
At the same time, diplomatic channels have not fully closed. Pakistan, Turkey and several Arab states have been involved in efforts to encourage direct or indirect talks between Washington and Tehran, though no breakthrough has yet emerged.
If approved, even limited US ground operations would represent a major escalation with potentially far-reaching military and political consequences, both for the region and for Trump’s already controversial Iran strategy.
