On this day in 1968, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey enjoyed its very first theatrical engagement ever by premiering for audiences in Washington, D.C. (It's New York premiere would follow tomorrow, along with a limited U.S. release to get people talking.) Careers have been built on analyzing this movie. Oceans of ink spilled. Who knows how many PhD dissertations were born in theaters in the dark watching this film.
