Paul Scholes says only one Arsenal forward could make Team of the Season
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has questioned Arsenal’s standing as potential Premier League champions this season.
The former England international suggested the Gunners may be the weakest side to lift the title if they finish top of the table.
Arsenal have faced strong criticism following their recent dip in league form under Mikel Arteta. A 3-2 defeat to Manchester United has increased the pressure on the north London club.
That loss left Arsenal on a three-match winless run in the Premier League. Despite their league position, doubts persist about the squad’s overall quality.
Scholes shared his views during the latest episode of The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast. He was particularly unimpressed by Arsenal’s attacking options when compared to past champions.
He said: “If Arsenal win the league, this could be the worst team to win the league. If you’re thinking of picking a team of the season and picking the front four, nobody from the Arsenal team gets in that.”
Scholes questions Arsenal’s attack
Scholes compared Arsenal’s forwards to those of previous title-winning teams. He pointed to the standard set by earlier champions as a clear benchmark.
He added: “Look at previous champions – Liverpool’s forwards, brilliant. Possibly the only one is [Bukayo] Saka, and I don’t think he’s been brilliant. He’s not scored many goals this year or assists.”
The former United midfielder made it clear he feels Arsenal fall short in key attacking areas. His remarks suggested that the Gunners lack players who can decide games at the highest level.
Arsenal’s recent results have added weight to critics’ concerns. Their inability to turn draws and losses into wins have raised fresh questions.
Even so, the league table still paints a positive picture for Arteta’s side. Arsenal currently sit first in the standings.
They have attained 50 points from 23 league matches this season. That total leaves them four points ahead of Manchester City and Aston Villa.
Their next league fixture offers a chance to end the winless streak. Arsenal are set to travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United on Saturday afternoon.
