Major UK hospitals are struggling with influx of flu patients

Tengrinews.kz - Patients in the UK have been warned of potential two-day waits in emergency departments, as several hospitals across the country have declared a critical situation, and the National Health Service (NHS) is struggling to cope with the winter flu crisis, according to The Times.
The newspaper reports that doctors have stated the level of care is at an "unsafe and unacceptable" level, which could cost lives, while medical institutions explain the situation by the exceptional demand during the busiest time of the year.
Health Minister Wes Streeting said he "felt ashamed" about the conditions of patients in hallways, but warned that significant improvements in the healthcare system may not happen until next winter.
NHS leadership reported that flu cases have increased to about 5,000 per day, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced criticism for focusing on planned surgeries while emergency departments are barely managing the load.

"Patients have been warned of two-day waits in A&E as nine hospitals around the country declared critical incidents and the NHS struggles to cope with the winter flu crisis," the article states.

For example, the Royal Liverpool University Hospital warned patients that waiting times in the emergency department could be up to 50 hours. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust reported a critical situation, noting that emergency departments are overcrowded, and advised patients to "think carefully" before visiting and possibly seek help from pharmacies.
NHS National Medical Director Stephen Powis described the situation as a "quadruple epidemic," with outbreaks of flu, COVID-19, norovirus, and RSV increasing the pressure on hospitals. RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) has symptoms similar to a common cold but can lead to more serious lung diseases and breathing problems.
