St. Benedict’s Curling Comeback
Rebuilding a curling rink is no small task, but in St. Benedict, it has become a symbol of what a community can accomplish together. For decades, the local rink served as the heart of this small agricultural area. It was the place where people returned from miles away to curl on natural ice, enjoy homemade rink burgers and pie, and gather in the beloved Lizard Lounge. When structural issues forced the rink to close in 2019, it left a noticeable gap in community life.
Today, that spirit is being rekindled. The St. Benedict Community & District Curling Club has secured the original rink site and is constructing a new two-sheet facility complete with an improved spectator area, kitchen, and washrooms. Most of the labour is being donated, a reflection of the pride residents feel for the sport and the memories built around it. Volunteers and board members have already put hours into the project, driven by the shared desire to see curling return to the centre of town life.
To help cover material costs, the club is inviting supporters to take part in a unique fundraiser. For $500, individuals, families, companies, or memorial donors can have their name permanently engraved on a curling rock used in the new rink. Monetary donations of $500 or more will also be recognized on a display inside the building. These contributions are helping bring back a facility that has meant so much to the region since the original rink was built in 1949.
The project carries forward a long tradition of community effort. As noted in the 1993 St. Benedict History book, the old rink was sustained for decades by volunteers, ice makers, caretakers, and the many people who cooked, curled, and cheered from the sidelines. That same spirit is guiding the rebuild today. While the original structure may be gone, the foundation of support remains strong. St. Benedict’s renewed rink will once again offer a place for people to gather, play, and grow the game for generations to come.
