Williamson County leaders to vote on praising Gov. Abbott border security efforts
The Texas governor could receive a formal show of support next week from some Central Texas leaders for his concentrated, aggressive efforts on the border.
WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — The Texas governor could receive a formal show of support next week from some Central Texas leaders for his concentrated, aggressive efforts on the border.
At their meeting Tuesday morning, the Williamson County commissioners will vote on a resolution to commend Gov. Greg Abbott "for his dedication to securing the Texas border and for his proactive efforts to address the complex issues associated with illegal immigration and border security."
The commissioners court agenda specifies that Commissioner Valerie Covey, who represents precinct three, is introducing the measure. While the item is not specifically advocating for any local policy changes, it would send a political message that Williamson County leaders back any efforts "aimed at enhancing border security and pledges our support" for Abbott.
The resolution concludes, "We, the Commissioners Court of Williamson County, affirm our support for the implementation and maintenance of secure borders for the United States of America, and that we advocate for the allocation of federal resources necessary to effectively monitor and control the nation's borders, in alignment with Governor Abbott's vision and initiatives; and that we call upon the federal government to work collaboratively with Governor Abbott and his administration to advance solutions that promote secure borders, protect our communities, and uphold the principles of law and order."
The commissioners will discuss this resolution at their meeting, which starts at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the historic Williamson County Courthouse in downtown Georgetown.
The governor started Operation Lone Star, a multibillion dollar initiative to slow down illegal border crossings. These efforts grew to include busing migrants to other cities across the country, building a military base camp in one community and stationing National Guard soldiers throughout the area.
The border is becoming an even more of a high-profile issue on the presidential campaign trail — with Abbott joining former President Donald Trump on a Thursday trip to Eagle Pass. On the same day, President Joe Biden visited Brownsville to push for a border deal that fell apart after Trump urged his supporters in Congress to oppose it.
Trump also made headlines by saying Abbott is on his vice presidential shortlist. However, the governor said Friday he plans to stay in Texas.
