Manor mourns loss of student, cancels classes at high school where student died until Monday
MANOR, Texas (KXAN) – The Manor ISD superintendent said classes at Manor Senior High School will be canceled for the rest of the week while the community mourns the loss of a student.
Manor Police said Darrin Loving, 18, was “stabbed in the chest.” The suspect, identified as Mac Brown Mbah Mbanwei, 18, was arrested and charged with murder. He is being held in Travis County Jail with a bond set at $1 million.
Police said the suspect used a kitchen knife as the weapon.
“It is truly a tragedy. We're absolutely heartbroken,” said Robert Sormani, Manor ISD’s superintendent.
“Manor ISD is very much focused on the mental well-being and emotional well-being of our staff and students,” he continued.
Sormani said the district is offering mental health support to students, staff and community members free of charge. Before restarting class, Sormani said it's essential that everyone feels ready to go back to school.
“That's what we're going to spend the rest of this week working on as we work through this recovery process,” Sormani said.
“Manor High School has over 2400 students. They come to school every single day, and they do great things –whether it's earning associate's degrees, whether it's athletics, singing music – they do great things,” he said. “I never want a tragedy like this to overshadow what they have accomplished.”
Sormani said they are planning on hosting a vigil for Loving this Frida.
