Alejandra Lara puts spotlight on environmental crises at Bellator 225 weigh-ins

STAMFORD, Conn. – Recent title challenger Alejandra Lara used her appearance at Friday’s Bellator 225 ceremonial weigh-ins to try to bring attention to some global crises.
Lara stepped on the stage at the Sheraton Stamford Hotel in Stamford, Conn., and when she took off her warm-up gear, she revealed several messages written on her body.
The most prominent was across her chest: “STOP DEFORESTATION” was written in all caps in black Sharpie. Above her waistline, she had “#SOSAmazonia,” a trending hashtag intended to call attention to the current crisis of rainforest burning in the Amazon jungle.
On her arms, ready to flex, she had “RESPECT NATURE” and “RESPECT ANIMALS.”
Down her right leg, she had written “Our lungs are on fire!,” another nod to the Amazon situation, and “WE ARE IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION.” On her left leg, she wrote “salva la selva,” which is Spanish for “save the jungle.”
Lara, from Colombia, wore a flower in her hair at Thursday’s media day interviews, which she said was her nod to nature and the planet, which increasingly is undergoing climate change crises in part due to global warming, much of which has been brought on by humans.
Lara (7-3 MMA, 1-2 BMMA) on Saturday will try to snap her two-fight skid, which started with a flyweight title loss to champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane, when she takes on Taylor Turner (4-5 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) on the Bellator 225 main card at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. The main card airs on Paramount and streams on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.
