Arsenal host Newcastle in their Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday evening, with both sides hopeful of securing that all-important first leg advantage.

The Gunners remain in the Premier League title race, although another opportunity to close the gap on leaders Liverpool came and went over the weekend – leaving them six points adrift having played a game more.

Arsenal won the FA Cup in 2019-20, which is their only piece of silverware under manager Mikel Arteta – unless you include two Community Shields…

So winning the Carabao Cup looks a top priority for Arteta with a strong starting XI is expected for the encounter.

That could be easier said than done given the form of Eddie Howe’s side, who beat Arsenal 1-0 at St James’ Park earlier this season.

The Magpies have won each of their last six games in all competitions, scoring 18 goals and registering four clean sheets during that run.

Overcoming Arsenal over two legs would see Newcastle reach their second Carabao Cup final in three seasons – the last a disappointing Wembley defeat to Manchester United.

Newcastle have never won this competition and are close to 70 years without winning a major trophy.

Injuries could play a big role in this first leg with Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar suspended for the visitors, while Arsenal will be without Bukayo Saka in addition to Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu and possibly Ethan Nwaneri.

Arteta also delivered a worrying press conference in which he revealed that both Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard are both battling a sickness bug.

Goals?

Defeat for Arsenal looks unlikely given they are yet to lose a single home game in any competition this season and have progressed from two of their last three Carabao Cup semi-finals.

But goals and creativity could be an issue with Bukayo Saka sidelined, while there are also concerns over the availability of attacking duo Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal’s attacking absentees paired with Newcastle’s excellent form and staunch defensive record is likely to yield a low-scoring affair with all to play for in the second leg at St James’ Park.
