In the heavyweight main event, power-punching Efe Ajagba, took just a little bit of time, to get the feel of former champ Charles Martin, before lowering the boom. Martin looked confident through the first two rounds, even shaking Ajagba with a couple clean shots. Then, Ajagba let loose with a right hand that dropped Martin, who was having a good third round up to that point. Martin managed to get out of the round, but his time was limited. He went down again in the fourth and Ajagba pounced for the finish. It looked as thought Ajagba would drop Martin again, but referee Thomas Taylor decided to prevent any more damage and stepped in as Martin was taking more punches. The time was 1:11 of the fourth round. Ajagba improves to 21-1-1, 15 KOs. Martin falls to 30-5-1, 27 KOs.
In a battle of power-punching light heavyweights, it figured to be a short night. Southpaw Umar Dzambekov (LA by way of Austria/Russia) and Ahmed Elbiali (Las Vegas by way of Egypt), Gave the fans what they wanted as Dzambekov turned out Elbiali’s lights with a vicious lead right uppercut. Dzambekov easily controlled the action in round one. He dropped the bomb in the second, leaving Elbiali’s legs quivering as he lay on the canvas, with vacant stare in his eyes. Referee Allen Huggins saw no need for a count, waving it off immediately. The time was 0:57 of the second round. Dzambekov improves to 14-0, 10 KOs. Elbiali falls to 24-2, 19 KOs. A Dzambekov-Radivoje “Hot Rod” Kalajdzic matchup was mentioned as a mouth watering possibility down the road.
Opening the main card portion of Zuffa Boxing’s Z03 show at the Meta Apex, unheralded lightweight Jaybrio Pe Benito (HI) shocked favored Abel Mejia (CA) with two crushing knockdowns. The first came courtesy of a left hook with seconds remaining in round two. Pe Benito wasted little time as round three began, landing a crushing right cross, dropping Mejia in a heap. Somehow, Mejia beat the count, but referee Mark Nelson decided he was worse for the wear and waved it off at 0:48 of round three, as he embraced the shell-shocked fighter. Pe Benito rises to 7-0, 5 KOs, while Mejia loses his first at 10-1, 7 KOs.
