50 Cent Stepping into The Ring with Rampage Jackson May Be an Actual Possibility
We're all familiar with trash talk and the concept of cultivating a surge of hype before a fight takes place. The heated back-and-forth between Mayweather and McGregor before the Irishman's debut boxing appearance is a perfect example.
As a result, we become somewhat numb to the occurrence of two potential combatants taking jabs at each other over social media and during interviews. Occasionally, however, there are situations that tend to shake things up a bit.
After a meeting with Scott Croker, president of Bellator, veteran rapper 50 Cent decided to take to Instagram and call out renowned MMA fighter Rampage Jackson and challenge him to a sanctioned match. Perhaps realizing the tumultuousness of his comment, he later deleted the post. However, Jackson still got word of it.
While he didn't have much to say, he acknowledged 50's post on Instagram with one of his own, which was a meme referring to the callout.
Coker said that he has been contacted by countless individuals since 50's post, with all of them asking details about whether or not the match will take place. While none of the details are set in stone (and who knows if they're even being discussed), let's look at the facts:
- 50 has experience in amateur-level boxing, but no official MMA record.
- Rampage Jackson is the former light heavyweight UFC world champion
- At age 42, 50 Cent is past his prime when it comes to combat sports, making it even more difficult for him to stand up against a veteran on the UFC.
- However, there are no rules in the organization that prevent the fight from taking place.
Many speculate this is some sort of publicity stunt (but for whose benefit is unknown). This could be a ploy by 50 Cent to put himself in the spotlight before the release of singles from his Street King Immortal album, which has been postponed since November 2012. Such a move could help the rapper bounce back from the trouble with his finances he's had in recent years (he has been involved in various lawsuits, filing for bankruptcy, and other financial management situations).
Regardless of why the rapper decided to target such an experienced fighter, one thing is for certain: it would be one of the most iconic matches in the sport's history.
