Wedding Crashers inspired woman to ‘try to poison her fiance with toxic eye drops’
Jayme Lynn Cruz allegedly tried to poison her husband with eye drops containing tetrahydrozoline, which can be deadly if consumed in high quantities.
A bride-to-be said the movie ‘Wedding Crashers’ inspired her to try to poison her fiance with toxic eye drops.
Jaymee Lynn Cruz, was arrested on Saturday after her fiance saw her putting eye drops in his soda in their home in Salisbury, North Carolina, police said.
Cruz told police she was inspired by the romantic comedy. In one scene Owen Wilson’s character, John, puts eye drops in the drink of his rival, Sack Lodge, played by Bradley Cooper.
In the movie, the ‘prank’ makes the victim violently ill. Cruz said her intention was to make her fiance sick, not to kill him.
After Cruz’s fiance saw his wife-to-be taint his drink, he took their child into a bathroom and called police, ABC reported.
They pair had reportedly been arguing over custody of their child and Cruz said she wanted to move out with her daughter.
She has been charged with distributing noxious or deleterious food, which carries a maximum sentence of 25 months in jail.
Tetrahydrozoline is the toxic chemical in eye drops that, when consumed, can cause difficulty breathing, slowed heartbeat, and may cause the consumer to fall into a coma.
Cruz is not the first to find inspiration in the 2005 film, directed by David Dobkin.
Lana Clayton admitted to killing her husband in July 2018 by putting eye drops in his drinks over the span of several days.
She was charged with murder and is still awaiting trial in South Carolina.
