Hulk Turned Mjolnir Against Thor, But Was He Worthy?
The Hulk once used Thor's hammer Mjolnir against him in battle, after Thanos controlled the Jade Giant - but was Hulk worthy?
One Marvel Comics hero who's not in dire need of physical upgrades or additional weaponry is the Hulk. The Jade Giant is one of the strongest beings in the universe and doesn't usually need extra help to defeat his enemies. However, what happens when Hulk wields Mjolnir?
Thor's enchanted hammer Mjolnir is specifically enchanted by only those deemed worthy. But, a handful of different heroes and villains have wielded the hammer both in continuity and in alt-versions of the Marvel Universe - in the comics and on the big screen. Most famously, Captain America lifted Mjolnir in the final battle scene in Avengers: Endgame, a moment that's also happened in the comics. Meanwhile, Loki was the latest character to wield Mjolnir in the pages of Donny Cates and Nic Klein's arc of Thor. But is Hulk worthy of lifting Mjolnir? In one case, despite lifting the hammer, no, not really.
In Avengers Assemble #4 (2012) by Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley, Danny Miki, Paul Mounts, and Clayton Cowles, the supergroup was facing a mysterious organization called Zodiac who were after the Ultimate Nullifier. It turned out the group was led by Thanos - and when the Avengers confront him, things got a tad crazy. As Thor tries to find out Thanos' reason for being on Earth, the Mad Titan takes control of the Hulk. Thor gets ready to swing Mjolnir at Thanos but is stopped by the Hulk, who grabs Thor and the hammer and slams him into the ground with it.
It's hard to blame Hulk for walloping Thor with his own hammer. He's not exactly in full control when he's Hulking out, so it's easy to see him being influenced by Thanos. Fortunately, after sparring with his teammates for a little bit, he is freed after Thanos disappears. But, the question remains, was Hulk worthy of Thor? The simple answer is no. Yes, Hulk absolutely smashes Thor to the ground with Mjolnir, but, he's holding both Thor and the hammer. Hulk wouldn't have been able to lift Mjolnir by himself, but since the God of Thunder had a firm grip on it as well, he was able to use it as a weapon against his teammate.
If anyone could lift Mjolnir without being worthy and thanks to pure strength, it would be the Hulk. But, that's not how the enchanted hammer works. However, with the help of Thor's grip, the Hulk was able to lift it, even if it was just temporary.
