Xbox ReBoxing Kit Encourages You To Donate Old Consoles To the Elderly
Xbox is encouraging gamers to donate old consoles to the elderly in the United Kingdom to combat loneliness and connect through gaming.
In a new initiative, Xbox is encouraging consumers to give their old consoles to the elderly in an effort to connect two different generations through the most unlikely tool: gaming. The idea was first created as a way to help connect people dealing with isolation and loneliness due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Although this initiative is taking place in the United Kingdom, many elderly citizens throughout the world may experience loneliness at different intervals. The idea of connecting young and old through gaming is an interesting premise that is sure to capture the attention of regular gamers. It is a concept everyone can surely relate to in some respect: wanting to ensure loved ones feel comfortable and supported.
It is not the first time the gaming industry has sought to make a difference in the surrounding community. Activision now hosts an annual charity esports event for active military members to participate in. The initiative raises money that is used to help veterans acclimate to civilian life by finding employment opportunities. The charity has already assisted over 70,000 veterans and is poised to help nearly 100,000 more in four years' time.
According to Xbox, Xbox: Beyond Generations is partnering with the charity organization Age UK to continue providing support to the older members of the population. The initiative involves reboxing old Xbox consoles and donating them to an elderly friend or relative. The initiative highlights two separate families based in the UK that have benefitted from the service. The release includes the heartwarming story of 83-year-old Mary discovered it was easier to get to know her grandson Jason by gaming together. It gives players a chance to pass on their old consoles while awaiting a restock of their game system of choice.
For those who are interested but are not quite sure how to actually get involved, Xbox outlines the multi-step process. First, the console earmarked to be delivered will need to have its factory settings reset. It is also recommended that owners wipe their consoles to protect personal data. The next step involves downloading the ReBoxing kit to learn more about how to package the console and to make the process of setting everything up easier for the older relative. The last step simply involves packing the console, all of the relevant components needed for setup, and any games for donation. The ReBoxing kit is an easy download and includes complete instructions for each step too.
This is not the first time Xbox has used its influence for good. Xbox is also celebrating Black History Month by highlighting the work of Black creators throughout the gaming industry during the month of February. But this ReBoxing project is timely as the pandemic continues to uproot virtually every component of our lives, including how often people can communicate or spend time with family members. Many people have been unable to visit their loved ones due to the risks of potential exposure to COVID-19, especially grandparents and those at a higher risk. This movement demonstrates that modern technology such as gaming can be used to inject some positivity into an individual's life.
