Captain America vs. Shang-Chi Won't Go How Marvel Fans Think
Marvel's solicitations for June reveal that Shang-Chi and Captain America will be getting a real fight, unlike in Marvel's Phoenix Tournament
It's been revealed that Shang-Chi, the Master of Kung Fu and the Super Soldier Captain America will be trading blows in an epic showdown. However, the outcome of this fight is going to be incredibly interesting, as the brawl will be over one of the most powerful objects in the entire Marvel Universe: the Cosmic Cube. It seems as though Shang-Chi and his new society of warriors are looking to claim it for themselves, but it appears as though Captain America is going to be determined to make sure that it doesn't go to anyone in this upcoming issue of Marvel's Shang-Chi.
Shang-Chi #2 will be coming from writer Gene Luen Yang with art by Dike Ruan, seeing the Master of Kung Fu leading the Five Weapons Society. Yang actually just wrapped up a previous Shang-Chi miniseries, which saw him taking over the organization that had once belonged to his evil father. Now, Shang-Chi has reunited with his long-estranged siblings, and they're now working together to hopefully return the Five Weapons Society back to its former noble glory in the Marvel Universe. However, the final issue of the miniseries did see the spirit of Shang-Chi's father warned him that he would one day become just as corrupt as he once was.
Now, this new teaser for Shang-Chi #2 releasing in June reveals that a Cosmic Cube is for sale, and several criminal organizations make bids to claim it. However, the Five Weapons Society is trying to get their hands on it as well, though it is unclear as to their intentions. Is Shang-Chi hoping to buy the Cube in order to keep it out of criminals' hands, or does he think that he can use and control its power? It seems as though that's exactly what Captain America will be determined to find out. Here is the cover art and synopsis for the upcoming issue from Marvel's June solicitations:
- SHANG-CHI #2
- GENE LUEN YANG (W) • DIKE RUAN (A)
- Cover by LEINIL FRANCIS YU
- Variant Cover by PEACH MOMOKO
- Variant Cover by MICHAEL CHO
- SPIDER-MAN VILLAINS VARIANT COVER BY NATACHA BUSTOS
- SHANG-CHI VS. CAPTAIN AMERICA!
- There's a Cosmic Cube for sale, and everyone from Hydra to AIM to the Hand is ready to pay up for it.
- But Shang-Chi and his Five Weapons Society might outbid them!
- Unless a certain Star-Spangled Avenger has anything to say about it…Uh-oh...
It makes sense that Captain America would want to put a stop to anything Cosmic Cube-related. After all, the misuse of a Cosmic Cube by the Red Skull is what led to Rogers becoming a HYDRA sleeper agent and taking over the world in Marvel's Secret Empire event. Regardless of whatever Shang-Chi's intentions might be, Rogers will most likely want to shut it all down, which will most likely lead to their brawl teased by the cover art and synopsis.
What's exciting is that this has the potential to actually be a proper fight between two of the most formidable fighters in Marvel Comics. While they both recently faced off in Marvel's Phoenix Tournament, Captain America tried to throw the fight so Shang-Chi would become the Phoenix instead of him (and the Kung Fu master was disqualified as a result). Now, the two heroes can actually fight in earnest when the issue releases this June from Marvel Comics, though it's anyone's guess as to who the victor will be.
