The Dark Side of the Kings pt. 1
I'd like to start with Jack Kent Cooke, who I thought was a great man, a man I personally admired, a very successful businessman who made some questionable calls in his personal life, especially when it came to his marriages. I never thought I could relate to a billionaire until I start reading about some of Mr. Cooke's ex-wives, and all of a sudden I felt like we were kindred spirits (be careful who you marry!). Even though this event takes place 14 years after Jack sold the Kings, it's still worth revisiting.
I was working in Washington DC and living in Rockville and Bethesda Maryland when this incident took place. Cooke was married five times, however two of those five were to the same woman, Marlene, who was either 45, or 43, or 37 years younger than Jack, depending upon which birth certificate she supplied. Marlene was a wild one. Already under investigation by the US government for conspiracy to import cocaine and fighting deportation, the Bolivian-born Marlene was arrested driving through Georgetown in November of 1993 with a man attached to the hood of her Jaguar convertible (a gift from Jack). After she was arrested for DUI, she even attacked the arresting officer with her gold pumps, striking him in the face. She told police she was driving through the neighborhood when a drunk jumped on her car and she was just trying to get him off. Of course, it turns out this was one of her boyfriends, who was living at the Watergate in an apartment she paid for. I was working in Chevy Chase that night about two miles from where this took place and obviously it was headline news, as Mr. Cooke still owned the Washington Redskins. I couldn't help feel for Jack (and I thought I had some bad marriages). Cooke divorced this psycho bitch immediately, only to remarry her two years later.
Then, of course, there's Jack's daughter, Jacqueline, who is really out there and makes Marlene look like Mother Teresa.
Another little known fact is that Jack was forced to sell the Lakers and Kings to pay off a divorce settlement estimated at $49,000,000.00, which according to the Guinness Book of World Records, was the largest divorce settlement in history at the time.

Anyway, I thought this would break up the monotony of The Kings and Bally's suck threads, and is intended for entertainment purposes only. (No billionaires were harmed in the posting of this thread)
