Don't let this game's mobile origins mislead. At its heart, Animus: Harbinger is a solid Souls-like for players not entirely "prepared to die." Appropriately referred to by some as "Dark Souls Lite," it wears its influence on its sleeve. But for such a low price, it's definitely readily available for those looking to scratch that hack-and-slash itch.
While it might be a touch grindy compared to its obvious inspiration, it still offers the same familiar mechanics that all fans of the infamously difficult series can identify. And at only a fraction of the price, no Souls veteran would pass up a new challenge for $7.99.
Heroes of Loot is not a complicated game, but it will keep players coming back for more and more with its addictive arcade action and its loads of loot and levels. Essentially Gauntlet on a budget, the game has the basics of RPG video games covered with its selection of character classes and stat-growing gameplay.
Choose a character, raid a dungeon, beat the monsters, collect the loot, rinse and repeat. It might not sound like anything grand on paper, but the habit-forming loop of dungeon crawling is one many players around the globe can appreciate and adore, especially for only $7.99.
The phrase "respect the classics" is one that definitely comes into play here, especially considering the Dragon Quest franchise is one of the cornerstones on which the RPG genre was founded. If gamers are looking to save a little money and still get a solid RPG experience, they wouldn't be dissatisfied with Crypt of the Serpent King. Though it lacks the depths of others seen in the genre, there's no denying that it doesn't scratch a certain sweet spot of dungeon crawling with some first-person hack-and-slash combat.
Though the graphics are slightly better than the classic and retro RPGs that inspired its winding dungeons and castle keeps, longtime players will be able to pick up this game and navigate its perils with the greatest of ease. That's not a bad exchange for $2.99.
