An inmate at Santa Clara County Main Jail attacked and injured two correctional deputies with a jail-made knife on Sunday evening, according to the sheriff's office.
SAN JOSE — An inmate attacked two correctional deputies Sunday evening at Santa Clara County Main Jail with a knife, sending the deputies to the hospital with moderate injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office said the man exited his cell in the 6B wing at 7:22 p.m. Sunday and assaulted the two deputies with a “jail-made knife,” kicking off the “shocking and unprovoked” attack. The ensuing physical struggle went to the ground, where the two deputies restrained the man with help from other deputies.
The two deputies were transported to a hospital, where they were treated for lacerations and punctures to their hands and shoulders. The sheriff’s office described the injuries as moderate; both deputies were later released from the hospital.
“Our correctional deputies play a critical role in maintaining law and order within the correctional facilities and this attack serves as a stark reminder of the risks our deputies face daily,” said Santa Clara County Sheriff Robert Jonsen in a press release.
Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the jail to immediately investigate the circumstances. The office did not clarify how the inmate was able to exit his cell.
