Trump allies worry multiple Mar-a-Lago employees will be indicted along with him: reporter
Bombshell new reporting indicates former President Donald Trump could be indicted on obstruction of justice and Espionage Act charges as soon as Thursday, and that former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows is accepting a plea to several lesser federal crimes in exchange for limited immunity. But it might not end there, said CNN correspondent Kristen Holmes — other Trump employees could be getting charged in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case, too.
This comes as Trump allies push out ads pre-emptively attacking Justice Department officials for the charges, with one ad saying, "They hate him for wing the fight to protect life, for exposing their deep state, for draining their precious swamp, and they already know he'll crush Biden."
"So much there to fact-check and dispute, but what are they trying to accomplish with that?" asked anchor Jake Tapper.
"Well, in this ad, it's the first time we see images of Jack Smith, a special counsel — really serves as a pre-emptive strike," said Holmes. "And I've been told by sources close to Trump that he's been, as he does, crowdsourcing opinions on whether or not he's going to be indicted. I have been told by Trump advisers that they are bracing for an indictment without specifically saying that they believe they will be indicted in this, and the defense we're likely to see. They are not just calling it political and a witch hunt and a hoax, they are also calling it election interference, and that's something that I was told by the Trump officials that they would be going to the Department of Justice to talk about, the fact this could be construed as a left-wing interference as he runs for a third presidential term."
Another key factor, she added, is that, "It's not just Trump that they worry about being indicted."
"We're also told that members of the team are very concerned that a low-level staffer, as well as a maintenance worker at Mar-a-Lago, are going to be indicted in this documents case," said Holmes. "We know this because witnesses have been asked about both of these individuals, their role at Mar-a-Lago, and they were seen on tape moving the boxes at one point, so, again, this is a team right now that's bracing for yet another series of indictments and yet another battle that Trump has as he's trying to win the GOP nomination."
