Being handed the responsibility of being vice-captain at Tottenham Hotspur has brought out a visibly more mature side to Cristian Romero, says journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke.
Cristian Romero has always been an incredible footballer, and he very quickly established himself as the best defender at Tottenham upon his move to London three years ago.
However, one criticism that has often, and rather fairly, been levelled at the Argentine, is that his propensity for passionate and aggressive play has let him down.
Indeed, the very element of his game that makes him such a special defender has also led to poor discipline that has cost his team dearly over the years.
Romero has three red cards and 26 yellow cards to his name in his Spurs career, but only one of those reds and four of the yellows have been this season (Transfermarkt).
This year, we have seen a markedly different Romero. Having been named one of Ange Postecoglou’s vice-captains, and in the absence of Heung-min Son, has been an admirable leader for Spurs.
Romero himself spoke about the improvements he has made when it comes to discipline and composure, stating it was an intentional choice to eradicate those mistakes from his game (Football.London).
Cristian Romero has matured at Tottenham
Now, journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke, has commented on this change in Romero, claiming the vice-captaincy has made a big difference in his attitude.
Speaking on The View From the Lane podcast, Pitt-Brooke said: “The impression I get from people working at Spurs is that even inside the building, the ascension to the vice-captaincy has brought out a different side of Romero. Takes more responsibility, more mature, more of a leader.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It’s brilliant to see Romero having a bit of a cooler head and not making silly decisions that cost the team. He’s not really lost any of his aggression or drive, he’s just being more clever with it now, and it’s making him an even better player.
