Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school player from a boys sport and one from a girls sport for their athletic achievements.
Boys sport Athlete of the Week: Calvin Winship, Severna Park, lacrosse
The senior goalie, a first-year starter, excelled with a 12-save performance in Friday’s 11-4 win over Anne Arundel County rival Broadneck. In a highly-anticipated showdown between defending state champions, 3A champion and No. 4 Severna Park improved to 7-0, while ending the 4A champ Bruins’ 26-game win streak. Winship opened the week with eight saves in the Falcons’ 16-4 win over Marriotts Ridge on April 8. Winship has allowed under four goals per game this season.
Girls sport Athlete of the Week: Emma Reaves, Westminster, track and field
At Saturday’s 29th annual Chuck Zonis Track and Field Invitational at North Hagerstown, the standout senior set a meet record in the discus with a personal best throw of 141 feet, 7 inches. It was the top throw in Maryland this season. The University of New Hampshire commit also won the shot put with a throw of 37-10.75 inches. In the indoor season, Reaves placed second in the shot put at the Adidas Indoor Nationals on March 15-17 in Virginia Beach.
