On Tuesday, for the third time, the UK Parliament did not approve the expulsion of “illegal” asylum seekers to Rwanda and demanded amendments in four aspects of the bill. Exempting former British colleagues in Afghanistan is one of the amendments British representatives are pushing for.
The proposal to exempt Afghan colleagues of Britain from expulsion to Rwanda has been put on the table by Des Browne, a former UK defense minister.
Peers voted 245 to 208, with a majority of 37. This fresh setback means the ongoing wrangling will persist as MPs once again rejected amendments to the government’s main Rwanda Bill, reigniting their dispute with the Lords.
Some opposition MPs in the UK, including the Labour Party, have also called for the implementation of this amendment.
The government had reportedly been considering concessions, including exemptions for Afghans who assisted British forces. However, the prime minister’s official spokesman has ruled out any such move.
This amendment supports Afghans who have served alongside British forces in Afghanistan in the past and have illegally entered the UK after the Taliban takeover.
