Classic Land Rover transformed into incredibly powerful EV… with plans for more retro motors to follow
A NEW retro-fit Land Rover has been unveiled complete with a full EV conversion that preserves the motor’s classic heritage.
Engineering firm Bedeo has launched an electric conversion of the Land Rover Defender 110, with unique four-in-wheel motors replacing its petrol or diesel engine.
The first in a line of “Reborn Electric: Icons” by the electric mobility specialists, the plan is to give enthusiasts the opportunity to drive a range of classics – but with battery power.
Bedeo’s setup took eight years to develop and the pair of in-wheel motors were designed and engineered by subsidiary firm Protean Electric.
Each motor is said to produce 80bhp and 479lb ft, with total output at 320bhp and 1916lb ft for a 0-62mph time of 10 seconds and a top speed of 80mph.
The car supposedly weighs only slightly more than the original 4×4, and the design enhances the area between the centre of the car and driving wheels, allowing for more space.
The new vehicle is said to have been tested over 37 million miles across Europe.
Cabling has also been minimised with two supplying power and a further smaller one used by the ECU, while the motor system, according to the firm, runs almost silently, enhancing the experience for drivers and their passengers.
Bedeo say the power is supplied by a 75kWh battery that can be topped up in five hours from a 22kW charger and attains a claimed range of 153 miles.
Having used the technology in the past, as part of a range-extender conversion deal for older diesel vans, Bedeo attempted to extend their working life and improve their last-mile delivery capabilities.
Pricing estimates vary, as Bedeo declined to comment on the cost, however Autocar suggests the inclusion of the motors will be an extra £25,000 on top of the existing price of a bespoke Defender. The car is even likely to be in the region of £100,000.

Although beginning the Icons line with a Defender, the company hopes to convert other iconic vehicles to electric power.
