The periodic review session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on Afghanistan’s human rights situation will be held today, Monday, April 29th.
The review session, which will run from April 29th to October 10th, will examine the human rights situation of 14 countries, including Afghanistan.
On the first day, before lunch, the human rights report of New Zealand will be scrutinized, while the afternoon session will focus on Afghanistan’s human rights situation.
These assessments rely on reports from independent human rights experts, national reports of the countries under review, and input from civil society groups.
Nasir Ahmad Andisha, Afghanistan’s representative to the UN Human Rights Commissioner in Geneva, will participate in today’s session with his team.
In his 2024 report, Richard Bennett, the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, described Afghanistan’s human rights situation as more dire than before.
Meanwhile, the US State Department, in its annual report released a few days ago, stated that human rights in Afghanistan had been unprecedentedly violated.
