While many fashion lovers purposefully avoid the colour when choosing swimwear, whether it’s a sultry two-piece or cut-out cossie, nothing is more powerful than opting for all-white.
Just last month Rochelle Humes, 35, showed off her incredible abs in a two-piece while enjoying a luxury family holiday in the Maldives, while Lucy Mecklenburgh, 32, ensured she looked stylish too with a strapless white swimsuit in Dubai.

White swimwear initially began to gain fans way back in the 1930s and went on to become a classic Hollywood look, with the likes of Marilyn Monroe making white swimwear popular.
Anita Lo, owner of Clara’s Box vintage, says: “Brigitte Bardot wore a two-piece white ensemble the first time a bikini had ever been worn on screen in The Girl in the Bikini.
“Ursula Andress then sported an ivory white two-piece in the first James Bond film, “Dr No”, and in 1964 Sports Illustrated fitted its cover model in a white bikini for its annual swimsuit issue.
“By the 1960s, white swimwear was no doubt a summer essential as women began to tan – the colour perfectly accentuated their skin tone.
“This is one of the key reasons why it has stood the test of time.”

Given the far-flung, exotic and super sunny destinations celebs like to visit, it’s hardly surprising the likes of model Caprice and Abbey Clancy want to wear something that really shows off their natural tan.

“Celebrities and fashion-forward individuals often choose white swimwear as it is perceived as a very chic choice that makes their tan stand out and leads to more visually appealing photographs… increasing their chance of being featured in the media.
“It’s often shown off in social media content, due to its photogenic qualities, and creates striking contrasts against various backgrounds.
“Lucy Mecklenburgh was recently credited in many media channels for how stunning she looked in a white swimsuit in Dubai, and her followers will seek to replicate the look as an attempt to buy into that lifestyle.”
How to get it white
For those looking to recreate the luxury look without the huge price tag, it’s not as hard as many of us think to choose the right white costume.
Alison says: “Everyone wants to feel amazing in swimwear, as it offers minimal cover compared to many other types of clothing.
“If you choose the right fit, style, and are confident in your choice, white swimwear can be just as flattering and stylish as any other colour choice.
“Due to white swimwear sometimes being more transparent when wet compared to darker colours, many people are concerned about modesty and making them feel uncomfortable or self-conscious, especially in certain lighting conditions.
“There are some factors that you need to consider when choosing white swimwear including fabric quality and opacity, as thin or poorly made white swimwear can become transparent in water.
“Look for designs that offer additional lining, particularly in the crotch area as this help enhance opacity and provide extra coverage and comfort.
“Look for features such as double stitching, reinforced seams, and fade-resistant fabrics to ensure longevity.
“White swimwear can be more prone to showing stains and discolouration, which can be challenging when using sun creams and fake tanning.”

Alison says: “As white swimwear exudes a classic and timeless elegance, it can create a sophisticated and chic look that is versatile and suitable for various occasions, from beach days to poolside parties.
“The perception of white swimwear as risqué or brave is influenced by factors such as transparency concerns, attention-grabbing qualities, maintenance challenges, cultural norms, and individual comfort levels.
“While some may view white swimwear as a bold and empowering choice, others may perceive it as daring or unconventional, depending on their perspective and experiences.”
How to avoid a total wash out
If you’re put off because you’re not blessed with a tan, or simply like being paler, that’s not to say white isn’t for you – you just need to consider the shade.
Stories With Clothes’ Abbey Booth adds: “From stark white to buttery creams – white can look really effective on paler or cooler skin tones as well as darker skin tones.
“Cool skin tones has a slightly blue undertone, so cool colours harmonise hence why it looks so amazing.
“With a cool skin tone, if white is too stark for you, consider whites with a lilac or slightly grey undertone.
“If you have a warmer skin tone, you will be better to go for a warmer, creamy tone of white because that will harmonise your skin tone.
“Look for ivory, creams, and there’s a lot of really soft peaches around this year that could be a great alternative for you.”
