Captioning his post, the man asked fellow coin collectors for their advice.
He wrote: “I found an old coin collection on my new property, and I’m wondering what you guys think of it.”
The coin enthusiasts were quick to weigh in, with many estimating that the man was set to make thousands.
Commenting on the post, one wrote: “No expert, but likely thousands of dollars worth of silver and gold combined, not including any potential key dates. Just be sure not to clean them.”
“Holy s*** that’s a lot of gold and silver!!” added another, while a third wrote, “Absolute jackpot.”
And it seems they could well be right.
A single gold balboa recently sold for around £2,160 meaning all four could fetch around £8,640.
Many were keen to know how exactly the man had come into his jackpot.
He explained: “We bought a cottage off an elderly lady whose husband had just passed away and the garage was full of tools and objects that were like 50-100 years old.
“In that mess was this coin collection in a box.”
Others questioned whether relatives of the previous owners might come back to claim the coin collection but the new owner explained that they hadn’t wanted any of the home’s contents.
How to find out how rare your coin in
The most valuable coins tend to be ones with low mintage numbers, historically important, or an error.
After you’ve got an idea what the coin is, the next step would be to take a look at what has recently sold on eBay.
If you’ve got a coin that you would like to sell at auction then you can contact a member of the British Numismatic Trade Association.
They usually deal in very old coins but they may be able to help you assess whether it’s worth selling your coin at auction or whether it would be valuable to collector.
Or, you could sell the coin yourself on eBay.
