Orioles game Tuesday vs. Blue Jays at Camden Yards postponed because of rain
The Orioles and Blue Jays will play a traditional doubleheader Monday, July 29, with the first game scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
The Orioles’ sweepless streak is in danger for the second time in the past week.
Baltimore’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday evening was postponed because of inclement weather. The wet conditions and forecast of more rain made it difficult to envision getting the game, originally scheduled for 6:35 p.m., in at a reasonable hour.
With more rain expected Wednesday, the Orioles and Blue Jays decided to push Tuesday’s game — Baltimore’s first postponement this season — to late July when Toronto comes back to Camden Yards. The clubs will play a traditional doubleheader Monday, July 29, with the first game scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
Moving Tuesday’s game to July turns the current series against the Blue Jays (19-22) from a three-game set to a two-gamer. The Orioles lost the series’ first game Monday, 3-2 in 10 innings, making Wednesday’s contest the deciding one in determining whether Baltimore (26-14) can keep its American League-record streak of not being swept in the regular season alive.
The streak, which is up to 104 series and dates to May 2022, is MLB’s longest since World War II. If the Orioles win Wednesday, it will tie them with the 1903-1905 New York Giants for third all-time behind the 1906-1909 Chicago Cubs (115) and the 1942-1944 St. Louis Cardinals (124). If the game isn’t played, the loss Monday will not count against the Orioles, as a lone game does not constitute a series.
Last week, Baltimore was at risk of losing the streak in a scheduled two-game series against the Washington Nationals after dropping the first game. But the Orioles scratched and clawed for a 7-6 win in 12 innings to keep it alive.
Since the streak began — and excluding the massive caveat that is the Orioles being swept in the AL Division Series against the Texas Rangers in October — Baltimore has been one loss away from being swept 13 times. They are, naturally, 13-0 in those games and have outscored their opponents 75-33, holding teams to three or fewer runs seven times.
Kyle Bradish, who was scheduled to pitch Tuesday, will start Wednesday in the contest scheduled to begin at 12:35 p.m. The Blue Jays have yet to announce their starter.
If Wednesday’s game is postponed, it’s likely it would be played Thursday at Oriole Park. Neither team has a game scheduled for Thursday. The Orioles continue their homestand this weekend against the Seattle Mariners.
The doubleheader July 29 will be single admission. The second game will begin 30 minutes after the first ends. Fans with tickets to the originally scheduled July 29 contest will be able to attend both ends of the twinbill. Those with tickets to Tuesday’s game will receive a credit eligible for any remaining regular season game in 2024. The credit will be available Friday at 5 p.m. in fans’ “My Orioles Tickets” account.
