Man Utd player ratings vs Newcastle United: Amrabat and Mainoo shine, Amad gets 8/10
Manchester United beat Newcastle United 3-2 in the final Old Trafford game of the 2023/24 season.
The visitors started the first half strongly but the Red Devils gave them a strong reply.
Kobbie Mainoo opened the deadlock at the half-hour mark after he found himself at the end of a pleasing pass from Amad Diallo.
The Magpies brought the score to parity right after the break, courtesy of a link-up between Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon.
Diallo turned from a creator to a finisher as he fired home on the half-volley after Newcastle failed to defend from a corner properly.
Rasmus Hojlund scored within a couple of minutes of his arrival from the bench to give Man United some breathing space.
Lewis Hall bagged a spectacular goal in injury time but that proved to be a mere consolation for the visitors.
Let’s get into the player ratings.
Player Ratings
Andre Onana – 6/10
Onana made an excellent save to deny Longstaff which could have had huge implications on the final scoreline.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5/10
The right-back gifted Isak a fantastic opportunity to lead moments after their equaliser.
Casemiro – 7/10
The former Real Madrid man started the game by misplacing a couple of passes and missing a sliding tackle. He did make amends by clearing the ball off the line and making a crunching tackle against Gordon.
Jonny Evans – 6/10
The veteran showed his commitment and passion for the Red Devils, possibly for the final time in front of the Old Trafford crowd.
Diogo Dalot – 6/10
The Portuguese full-back was caught off guard during Newcaslte’s first strike. It was not a sound defensive performance, but he continued to show how good and comfortable he was with the ball at his feet.
Sofyan Amrabat – 7/10
The midfielder bailed out his teammates multiple times, including a marvellous block against Alexander Isak. He was the best player on the pitch in the first half.
Scott McTominay – 6/10
McTominay featured as number 10 but looked lost in that role, specifically with Bruno Fernandes ahead of him.
Kobbie Mainoo – 7/10
Mainoo found himself in acres of space and had an extra second compared to other players to place the ball behind the goalkeeper.
Amad Diallo – 8/10
A splendid Man of the Match performance from the young star. Diallo dribbled easily in tight spaces, set up Mainoo’s strike and scored a sublime goal.
Erik ten Hag must be blamed for not giving Diallo these chances earlier in the campaign.
Alejandro Garnacho – 6/10
It seems like the starlet needs a bit of rest after starting for the 36th consecutive time.
Bruno Fernandes – 7/10
Fernandes showed why he is the catalyst of the team. He pulled the strings in the midfield and must remain at Old Trafford next season.
