The United Nations has declared that around 800,000 people have fled the city of Rafah in southern Gaza following Israeli attacks.
Rafah, where over a million Palestinians had sought refuge, has seen a mass exodus towards central areas and Khan Yunis, according to Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), announced Sunday, May 18.
This wave of displacement among Gaza’s Palestinian residents began when Israel’s cabinet approved a ground assault on Rafah, prompting Israeli troops to engage Hamas in various densely populated areas of the city.
Lazzarini noted that displaced individuals are predominantly moving towards places previously destroyed by Israeli attacks, where they lack access to basic healthcare or drinking water services.
Israeli airstrikes and ground assaults on parts of Rafah have elicited widespread international condemnation, with AFP reporting on the renewed wave of these attacks on Saturday.
Rafah, a border city in southern Gaza, has become home to approximately 1.4 million Palestinian refugees. The UN warns that continued Israeli attacks on this city will result in a “full-scale disaster in Gaza.”
