Albany airport highlights program to help travelers with hidden disabilities

COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Albany International Airport highlighted a program designed to make it easier for people with disabilities to travel. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program gives passengers a way to communicate their needs in a respectful and discrete way.
They are given sunflower lanyards at check-in, so airport employees know they may need extra help. They are also allowed to board earlier, so they have more time to get settled. One traveler said the program made a big difference.
"That anxiety beforehand probably would have spiraled a lot worse, so I hadn't been able to sit with my family and get on quick," traveler Kasen said.
The Albany airport is the first airport in the U.S. to meet the United Nations standard for accessibility.
